Juan Sánchez's "Mixed Statement" is Installed in Gallery 208 at MoMA

HM&C congratulates Juan Sánchez for his 1984 painting Mixed Statement being acquired by MoMA. The painting is currently installed in Gallery 208 in Collection 1980s-Present. This Gallery, referred to as 500 Years, includes works by other important artists, such as Juan Francisco Elso, Coco Fusco, Las Yeguas del Apocalipsis, Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, José Alejandro Restrepo, and Kay WalkingStick.

As described by MoMA: "The artists in this gallery have worked to address legacies of colonialism in the Americas. Some use traditional Indigenous iconography to engage histories of resistance, or performative tactics to critique and counter stereotypes. Others promote solidarity across the Americas, imagining forms of unity through shared experience. Together, the works here shed light on the cultural debates of 1992 and on the artists and activists who worked to upend the celebratory narratives of conquest that marked this contentious anniversary."
