Hutchinson Modern & Contemporary is pleased to announce the representation of Freddy Rodríguez and will present a solo show of Rodriguez’s abstract geometric paintings in the Diálogos section at Frieze Art Fair, New York May 1-5, 2019.
Rodríguez’s work fuses conceptual and stylistic elements from New York School painting with Dominican history, Caribbean culture, and transnational concerns. He employs abstract geometries and vibrant color to reference themes generally considered at odds with pure formalism, including the European conquest and colonization of native people, dictatorship, and baseball.
Freddy Rodríguez was born in 1945 in Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic. Feeling his life was in danger due to the local political climate, he moved to New York City in 1963. Rodríguez proceeded to study painting at the Art Students League and at the New School for Social Research; and textile design at the Fashion Institute of Technology.
Rodríguez is the subject of a forthcoming monograph by E. Carmen Ramos, which is part of the A Ver: Revisioning Art History book series published by the UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center.
