Hutchinson Modern & Contemporary is pleased to present Juan Sánchez: RICANSTRUCTIONS: condiciones que existen, a solo exhibition of work by artist and activist Juan Sánchez. Opening September 1, 2022, RICANSTRUCTIONS: condiciones que existen features twenty-two works created over the last forty years.
Born in 1954 to working-class Puerto Rican parents in Brooklyn, New York, Juan Sánchez uses painting, printmaking, and photography to explore the crossroads between Puerto Rican, Nuyorican, and American history and culture. Collaging family photographs, newspaper clippings, Christian and Taino iconography, bilingual writing, flags, hearts, butterflies, and more, Sánchez creates mixed media work that encourages viewers to consider and to celebrate the complexity of living between and within multiple ethnic, racial, and national identities. RICANSTRUCTIONS: condiciones que existen is the artist’s first solo exhibition in over five years and the gallery’s first exhibition of the artist’s work.
