Alejandro Corujeira: The Subtle Sound of Intuition
November 10th 2022- January 27th 2023 -

"For me, painting is a meditative act, of making a gesture on a canvas and then refraining."
-Alejandro Corujeira
-
Origins
A graduate of the Escuela de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires, in 1986, Corujeira came to art through his interest in spirituality and ancient knowledge systems from indigenous cultures. During and after his years of study, he would travel to the Andean region of Northwest Argentina and spend time in remote villages where he would immerse himself in artesanal and spiritual practices while also painting, writing, and meditating. These experiences would mark his entire career and approach to art.

In 2004, he was an artist in residence at the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation in Bethany, CT.
In 2006, he had a major solo exhibition at the IVAM (Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno) where he also created a more immersive painterly environment with works that consisted of serpentine ribbons of color and organic effervescent forms in vivid and layered colors.
Since 2008, his work started to experiment with organic forms, partially inspired by botanical drawings and Chinese landscapes. In his words, “I don’t think of those leaf-like forms as part of a landscape, but as a microcosm that speaks of everything surrounding us.”
In 2009, he held his first solo exhibition in New York at Marlborough Chelsea.
For his 2017 exhibition at El Centro de Arte de Burgos, he produced an exhibition where paintings and freestanding sculptures were placed in dialogue. The paintings now incorporated loose, calligraphic gestures, which he connected to the notion of pneuma or breath.

“A thought, a dream, a longing, when drawn on paper, has already been drawn in our own lives. For me, the image always exists prior to its drawing, and that is why a drawing springs forth.”
-Alejandro Corujeira

"Color is not fixed in any place. It is Constantly moving: it is stained light. In my work, there are concentrations of color and energy in the form of lines that move from one place to another in search of a body in which to deposit themselves. Color is alive as this energy shifts. It is autonomous, not yet related to the other forms that intervene in the piece. The successive layers of almost transparent paint allow this light to internalize and enter the weave of the canvas. I invite you to travel towards the centre of the painting. If you penetrate it, you will find yourself enveloped in this light of color. And there will be silence."
