The artist in his Madrid studio

Abstraction has always been at the heart of Alejandro Corujeira’s artistic language. Geometric forms play the main role throughout his early work, morphing over the years from more symbolic, hard-edged objects to serpentine-line patterns, and later into more organic forms over diffused and almost imperceptible layers.

Time is another essential element in Corujeira’s work, both in his creative process and in what his works ask of the viewer. Each painting is the result of a slow and meditative dialogue between him and the blank canvas, in which he lets the emptiness guide him. Then there are moments of distancing and detainment, of letting the work "rest" while time and other elements—music, poetry, reading, meditation, drawing—permeate the process and influence the next stages of further layering and arranging, erasing and re-drawing. This intuitive process lasts for several weeks or months with a single work, infusing it with a lyrical and suggestive atmosphere that rewards slow viewing and contemplation.

  • "For me, painting is a meditative act, of making a gesture on a canvas and then refraining."

    -Alejandro Corujeira

  • Origins

A graduate of the Escuela de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires, in 1986, Corujeira came to art through his interest in spirituality and ancient knowledge systems from indigenous cultures. During and after his years of study, he would travel to the Andean region of Northwest Argentina and spend time in remote villages where he would immerse himself in artesanal and spiritual practices while also painting, writing, and meditating. These experiences would mark his entire career and approach to art.

    Making & Showing

    1991-2001: Madrid & Institutional Recognition

In 1991, Corujeira moved to Madrid after a short stay in Mexico. He arrived in a city and a country on the verge of a major re-evaluation of its historic relationship with Latin America, spurred by the 500 anniversary of the Conquest of the Americas. As of 1992, a series of exhibitions in Spain and across the world started to question the dominant narratives of colonization and geopolitics. Corujeira took part in several of these exhibitions, including the seminal La Escuela del Sur: El Taller Torres-García y su Legado curated by Mari Carmen Ramírez and Cecilia de Torres at the Museo Reina Sofía, which later traveled to other museums, like the Archer M. Huntington Gallery (now the Blanton Museum of Art) in Austin, the Bronx Museum in New York, and the Museo Rufino Tamayo in Mexico.

Corujeira's work in this period dialogues with other artists who try to fuse an interest in contemporary abstraction and pre-Columbian art, including Francisco Matto, Josef and Anni Albers, César Paternosto, Alejandro Puente, Alfredo Hlito, and others. His work is imbued with a strong sense of poetry and symbolism, and his titles reflect this interest.

Alejandro Corujeira, La tarea del paisaje, Museo Reina Sofía, 2002
In 2002, Corujeira was invited to exhibit at the Espacio Uno project space in the Museo Reina Sofía, invited by the then director Juan Manuel Bonet. In this exhibition he created an environment by painting directly on the wall and placing paintings and reliefs in dialogue. In this moment, his work became less representative and symbolic and more engaged with abstract and organic forms.
  • In 2004, he was an artist in residence at the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation in Bethany, CT.

In 2006, he had a major solo exhibition at the IVAM (Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno) where he also created a more immersive painterly environment with works that consisted of serpentine ribbons of color and organic effervescent forms in vivid and layered colors.

Since 2008, his work started to experiment with organic forms, partially inspired by botanical drawings and Chinese landscapes. In his words, “I don’t think of those leaf-like forms as part of a landscape, but as a microcosm that speaks of everything surrounding us.”

In 2009, he held his first solo exhibition in New York at Marlborough Chelsea.

For his 2017 exhibition at El Centro de Arte de Burgos, he produced an exhibition where paintings and freestanding sculptures were placed in dialogue. The paintings now incorporated loose, calligraphic gestures, which he connected to the notion of pneuma or breath.

In 2018, Corujeira was invited to make a solo presentation at the 33rd Bienal da São Paulo by curator Gabriel Pérez-Barreiro. He created a large-scale sculptural/pictorial environment on the mezzanine of the iconic Oscar Niemeyer pavilion. This included a maze-like structure of curved painted wooden panels through which visitors could walk, as well as two free standing sculptures, a series of paintings, and a painted intervention on the wall.

Since then, his work has continued to develop into new poetic languages in painting and sculpture, always within the tradition of abstraction. He held two solo exhibitions in London (2018 and 2020) at Cecilia Brunson Projects.

  • “A thought, a dream, a longing, when drawn on paper, has already been drawn in our own lives. For me, the image always exists prior to its drawing, and that is why a drawing springs forth.”

    -Alejandro Corujeira

  • Drawings

    Drawings

Alejandro’s drawings are closely related to his paintings and sculptures, tied together in themes and ideas as he works through processes of forms, arrangement and color. The curvatures that originate in his drawings appear in the sculptures and canvas, as a kind of working composition.

Drawing is a vital practice within Alejandro’s artistic process—its repetitive, intuitive and immediate nature helps to conjure images and ideas deep within his mind. For this reason Alejandro has likened drawing in his practice to breathing, walking, and meditating. The drawings are thoughts emerging, always present and accompanying him throughout his creative process in painting and sculpture. The drawings are the closest and most immediate extension to an image or idea that he’s trying to exteriorize.

As he states, “for me, drawing has its own autonomy, and in many cases it expresses or reveals what painting or sculpture cannot, just like when we search for the right word to finish a sentence.”

  • "Color is not fixed in any place. It is Constantly moving: it is stained light. In my work, there are concentrations of color and energy in the form of lines that move from one place to another in search of a body in which to deposit themselves. Color is alive as this energy shifts. It is autonomous, not yet related to the other forms that intervene in the piece. The successive layers of almost transparent paint allow this light to internalize and enter the weave of the canvas. I invite you to travel towards the centre of the painting. If you penetrate it, you will find yourself enveloped in this light of color. And there will be silence."
